The Prince of Porn

My oldest son just turned 14. For his birthday he wanted “Prince of Persia: Warrior Within” for the PS2. Now I am a fan of the Prince of Persia games; I remember playing the original on my roommate’s Macintosh. It was 2d back then, but it was innovative for its time. The character could do things like jump and grab a ledge and pull himself up. I died a lot and didn’t get very far and eventually moved out and forgot about the game until a couple of years ago when we got “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” for our PS2.

15 years worth of evolution had changed it to a 3d kill-fest extravaganza. The graphics were great, the fight combinations were very cool, it had a reasonably good plot. I played it a few times, died a lot, and didn’t get very far (I prefer playing football on the PS2) but my son loved it. He played it every chance he got and eventually won it twice.

So it was natural for him to want the sequel, and so we got it for him. It wasn’t until after we got home that we noticed the rating. M? 17+? For Prince of Persia? Sands was only rated Teen, and it never occurred to me that Warrior would be different. So I was given the assignment to find out just how inappropriate it really is.

The back said it was rated M for graphic violence and sexual situations and included a frontal shot of a slut with large CGI breasts that weren’t covered by much at all. The beginning movie had the same slut strolling along a ship deck, completely naked from the back, unless you include a couple of leather strings that were apparently holding the tiny strips of leather that sort of covered the front. I must say that animation has come a long way, because her breasts jiggled with every step.

Why was this necessary? The previous game did fine without making the main heroine naked (at least as far as I’m aware. Hmm…maybe I should go back and check on that…). There was no reason to put nudity in the game. None. Zilch. Zippo. It doesn’t add to the plot. If anything, it detracts from it – I mean, who would ever go into battle wearing an outfit that left every vulnerable spot (and in this case, the invulnerable spots as well) on the body open to attack? It’s just nudity for nudity’s sake, and it’s stupid.

Incidentally, I have the same feeling about writing; there is very seldom a valid reason to bring overt sexual encounters into a story, unless the story is sex just for the sake of sex. Does it advance the plot at all to tell us where she put her hand or how long his member was or how pointy her nipples became? I doubt it. Sex scenes titillate the reader and fill some space and, in the end, usually slow down the plot. Let the reader assume something happened or, if you must, give some hints and let the reader fill in the blanks. Unless the point of your story is the sex, there’s seldom a reason to have blatant sex in it.

There sure isn’t a point to it in Warrior. The fighting and moving is basically the same as Sands, so the naked women must be where the M came from. Someone, please, tell me why? Did Ubisoft get overrun by horny teenagers? Is this the future of gaming?

I think I’ll throw away our PS2 and our TV and our computer and move my family into a cave.

A friend of mine bought GTA for her boys at Christmas, but they didn't receive it after I explianed the contents (thanks to another friend playing - not me!!).

So many parents don't notice the certified age, or maybe they just choose to ignore it.

And music's just as bad! Those 'parental guidance' stickers are voluntary (this I learnt by mistake!)

It does tend to make our job as parents a lot harder.

We keep the X-box right there in the TV room where everyone can see what's onscreen. The internet computers are in the living room. We don't give the kid much chance to hide explicit material. (and my Green Day CD was printed Parental Advisory Explicit Content right there on the CD art. It's not a sticker. But, then again, they're parents too.) It's all part of being vigilant.

I would like to ask, tho, if Josh finds that the sex scenes in my books slow down the plot. Just curious. (And I'm pretty sure the L/J smoochy ones in Valley do. I've already resigned myself that they'll mostly get cut. Dangit.)

Maybe next time you go out and buy a game, be smart about it and check the rating then you wouldn't have to be complaining about the game. Seriously...all I read is whinning. Just because the girl is dressed like that, doesn't mean its porn -.-

You should also look up what porn means, since you obviously don't know what it is. Jesus...

oh yeah i forgot to mention. The first Prince of Persia has sex in it...seriously rofl. You obviously don't know what you're talking about. Maybe you should take your family and hide away in a cave, and not tell your kids that sex and nudity is a part of life, and that you never had sex to have your kids...yeah go do that please.

Next time go do your research. It makes you seem totally ignorant, because you're critizing the second Prince of Persia when the first one has the same things!! I would know...I own the games -.-

What it all comes down to is the level of maturity of players, and the level of responsibility of parents. Games are clearly rated for their content (just look at the number on the box), so if a child is playing a game that is unsuitable, that is not the fault of the games industry, or the people that made the game

Ok there is a book and I forget what it's called but i'm 13 and Im really glad I read it. Ok so this book is about why kids play "bad" video games and I thought it help me understand why I like "bad" video games. One reason is that us kids like to do bad things and if u can do them in a game ex:steal a car. When u steal a car in gta u get a cool feeling like u arnt sapose to do that and u feel like a bad ass mofo!lol but we like to do bad things and this goes for every bodie here. Ok I think I remember what the book is called and it is "Grand Theft Child: the surprising truth about violent video games and what parents can do"
Here is a link to the book on Amozon http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.html/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/175-5339858-5455006?a=0743299515

I concur with the comment above me...you just are putting too much protection on your child. Games including women with any indication of decent coverage are on a rapid decline. And it's not even just games; everything in society today is leaning more and more towards benefiting the porn industry.

If you think your kids are so immature that when they see a scantily clad woman in a game, they're gonna go out and have some orgy, then yes, you must go out and live in a cave. Or join an Amish group.

Okay can i just say. I find this Laughable.
How far did you honestly get through the game?
like Shahdee, the chick with the metal thong, is in the game for roughly about 30min(If that) and has no real point but to introduce Kaileena, the "BAD" person of the game.
Now if you had played the game, you would not have had to post this as THERE IS NO SEX in the WHOLE game.
Further, as for your point on the outfit Shahdee wears. I think it is brillaint. If you were fighting someone like her with swords. would you be able to concentrate seeing her tits jiggle? it is actually a very effective "Metal" not "Leather" outfit. it was made to distract the attention.
